Teaching Typing in the Classroom (K–6 Teacher Guide)
TypeRockets is free for classrooms and needs no student accounts or logins. Students open the site, pick a profile, and play. Progress saves in each device's browser.
A simple weekly plan
- Monday: one new lesson (10 minutes).
- Wednesday: replay the lesson for more stars, then Falling Words.
- Friday: one-minute typing test and certificates for personal bests.
Station rotation
Typing works well as a 10-minute literacy station. Students can practice weekly spelling words in Typing Practice.
Shared devices
On shared Chromebooks, each student can add a profile on the device they always use. Every device keeps its own progress. With Classroom Pro, a class roster syncs every student's progress across devices.
Grade-level guides
See our kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grade pages for goals and lesson ranges.
Privacy for schools
The free version collects no student data: there are no accounts, and progress stays in the browser. With Classroom Pro, students join with a class code and a nickname only, never an email, and only you can see their progress. Read our privacy policy.
FAQ
Do students need accounts?
No. Students create a local profile with a first name or nickname. On the free plan nothing is sent to our servers. With Classroom Pro, students join your class with a code and a nickname, still with no email.
Is TypeRockets free for schools?
Yes. All lessons and games are free. Classroom Pro ($99 a year for up to 35 students) adds a class roster with a join code, teacher reports and printable certificates.
