Typing Speed Test for Kids

How many words per minute can you type? Take the free 1-minute typing test and print your certificate.

About this typing speed test

WPM (words per minute) counts every 5 correct characters as one word. Mistakes do not add to your score, so accuracy matters. Retake the test every week or two and watch progress in the Parent Dashboard.

Typing speeds by age

As a rough guide, kids who practice regularly often reach about 5–10 WPM in 2nd grade, 12–20 WPM in 4th grade and 20–30 WPM or more in 6th grade. Every child is different, so compare your child with their own last test, not with anyone else. See good typing speed for kids for the full table.

Tips for a fair test

  • Warm up with one lesson first.
  • Keep eyes on the screen, not the keys.
  • Do not rush: a mistake costs more time than a steady pace.
  • Test at the same time of day each week for an honest comparison.
How does the kids typing test work?

Choose 1 or 2 minutes and easy words or sentences. The timer starts on the first key. WPM counts only correct characters.

What is a good typing speed for kids?

It depends on age and practice. See our WPM by grade guide. Accuracy above 90% matters most.
