What Are the Function Keys (F1 to F12)?
The function keys are the row of keys labeled F1 to F12 across the top of the keyboard. Each one is a shortcut, and what it does depends on the app you are using.

Where is the Function keys?
The highlighted keys are the Function keys on a typical Windows laptop keyboard. Keyboards vary a little by brand.
What the Function keys does

On many laptops the top row starts out as volume, brightness and other controls. Hold Fn to use them as F1 to F12, or turn on Fn Lock.
Windows, Mac and Chromebook
Windows
Most keyboards have F1 to F12. Laptops often need Fn held down to use them.
Mac
The top row controls brightness, volume, music and more. Hold fn to use them as F1 to F12, or change it in System Settings → Keyboard.
Chromebook
The top row has Back, Refresh, Full screen, Show windows, Brightness and Volume. Hold Search (or Launcher) and press a top-row key to get F1 to F10.
Which finger presses it?
Function keys are a long reach, so it is fine to lift your hand and press them with your pointer or middle finger, then come back to the home row.
Fun fact
Early IBM PCs had ten function keys in two columns on the left side of the keyboard. The row of twelve along the top arrived with the IBM Model M keyboard in the mid-1980s.
